So I played through Hatoful boyfriend the bird dating simulator while my thoughts about the experience. The game gives the player the option of having human portraits being shown in each birds introduction screen. There was also the slightly embarrassing fact that I managed to get my name backwards like the Japanese style think getting Smith John when you intended to have John Smith. I commented a lot on the absurdity of the plot. You the player are the only human in a school of birds. Apparently in this world birds are intelligent and participate in society. Its not clear what the state of human society is as the player character appears to be the only human. I had unlocked one ending a feature of this sort of game. With multiple options of romance partner multiple play throughs are encouraged. My character was suddenly murdered in their cave by a shadowy organisation for failing to create close connections with the birds. I found out that simply playing and choosing the options that seemed the best to me would result in the bad ending. After consulting a guide it became clear that in order to get a happier outcome I would have to pick specific options in order to get the desired ending. The whole point of this exercise was not just to date birds but to study another culture through the lens of Auto ethnography. As Ellis says Auto ethnography is an approach to academic research that seeks to describe and analyse individuals experience with a culture that is not their own 2011. The intent of Auto ethnography is to acknowledge the subjective nature of sociological research and to take into account a researchers background. Visual Novels are often chosen by amateur developers with minimal experience as they are relatively easy to make. The game falls into two categories unique to Japanese games Otome and Doujin Soft. Doujin is a Japanese word that refers to a group of people who participate in a shared interest or hobby Hichibe and Tanaka, 2016. Within the world of video games Doujin soft refers to communities of amateurs and occasionally professionals making and distributing games that they have made. In English a comparable term would be fan games. Doujin developers are most often motivated by non-monetary rewards such as being part of a community or the joy of creating a game so Doujin games are often not made with the same restraints as commercial game development, this results in a wide variety of games available Hichibe and Tanaka, 2016. Originally games would be traded or sold at events specifically for Doujin games where fans could gather. In recent years with the proliferation of the internet it has become easier for creators to market their games, it has even led to Doujin games finding an international audience. Otome Games tend to emphasise story and character interaction meaning that many of the games tend to favour simulation and role playing making experiences that are slower paced than a first person shooter for example Kim,2009. Otome games are not a small market in 2011 being worth 14. So what did I think about Hatoful Boyfriend. I prefer games where the player can take more control such as JRPGs. If I had to pinpoint what it was about Hatoful Boyfriend that drew me in the absurd setting would be one. Another would be the humour throughout the game making this more than a boring visual novel. I have tried a few Visual Novels before, I have an Ace Attorney game that I fully intend to finish one day. I suspect that a more conventional visual novel would lose my interest, a large part of the draw for Hatoful Boyfriend for me at least was the absurdity of the game.
